In my 4 days Easter vacation in Cornwall I had the opportunity to try a few restaurants & pubs, and luckily I came across The Square at Porthleven. I was fortunate to find a table for Easter Sunday at lunch, I booked phoning on Good Friday and it was the last available for Easter!
The Square at Portleven is a restaurant located in the heart of the wonderful town of Porthleven overlooking the harbour. It’s the sister restaurant of the award-winning and more famous “The Victoria Inn” in Perranuthnoe.
This restaurant has been one of my best food discoveries of my vacation: adorable location, stunning food and great value for money. I couldn’t ask more for Easter!
Overlooking the picturesque harbour of Porthleven, the restaurant is probably in the best location possible in the area. The atmosphere inside is welcoming, relaxing, warm and with a modern touch. A couple of tables can benefit from an incredible view from the glass wall.
The Square at Porthleven is mainly specialised in fish based dishes. The menu changes daily according to what is available. The fish comes directly from the fishermen of the area. Local is best, and they definitely serve local fresh ingredients.
My Easter Lunch has been a joyful explosion of delectable flavours. I loved every single dish. The special Easter menu was alluring and it took me a good fifteen minutes to decide what to eat, each dish was so tempting!
Eventually I chose:
Starter: Crispy blue cheese arancini served with pear & walnut salad and blue cheese dressing;
Main: Crispy Cornish fishcake accompanied with real chips, rocket and tomato salad and spicy ketchup;
Dessert: Vanilla crème brûlée with poached plums, red wine syrup and chocolate shortbread;
Wine: A glass of Red Wine, Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy.
The starter was sensational. The arancini is a typical dish from Sicily and I ate them many times in the biggest Italian island, so I didn’t expect to have the best Arancini of my life in the middle of Cornwall! Surprise: this was indeed my best Arancini. The recipe is a revisited version of the sicilian traditional one, transforming a good dish to extraordinary.
In Sicily you can have an Arancino almost in any restaurant and food place. It’s a poor and simple dish. The Chef of The Square at Porthleven made a simple dish become a top class restaurant plate, adding a touch of creativity with the pear & walnut salad and the blue cheese, which is not part of the traditional recipe. The joint flavours gives you an incredible taste and the outside of the arancini were crispy and perfectly fried.
a cornish fishcake served with real chips.
You could taste the freshness of the fish.
I liked the combination with the spicy ketchup. The real chips were perfect: big and crispy, very tasty.
It was served with poached plums and a red wine syrup which helped to bring a worldwide popular and loved dessert to a whole new level. The dish was accompanied with a yummy chocolate shortbread, which was sublime! I loved the plating, very creative.
The restaurant was full and despite this service was efficient. The waitress was friendly and helped to make the entire experience perfect!
This restaurant should definitely be considered as a gourmet place and in my opinion it deserves an acknowledgment. Price is totally reasonable with the quality of dining experience a guest will have. I paid around £25 per person, including a glass of red wine.
