I decided to visit this Pizzeria in Brixton because a friend of mine said he had the best Pizza in London. Before visiting the place, I searched for reviews and I found many comments and articles talking about an “outstanding Neapolitan Pizza”.
Franco Manca is in Brixton Village, a nice place with lots of tempting eateries. The pizzeria has long communal tables and it’s always jam-packed with people. The queue luckily moves fast, and you can get a seat in less than 30 minutes. The service is really efficient and this is a big plus.
After around 30 minutes my wife and I had a table and we ordered almost a minute after, because we had time to look at the menu while we were queuing. A waiter handed it out to all the people waiting to have a table. Smart move, enhancing the desire and expectations!
The menu is formed of 6 pizzas – starting from a simple Tomato, Garlic and Oregano and ending with a more elaborated Tomato, Cured Organic Chorizo and Mozzarella. The cheapest pizza costs £4.50 and the most expensive £6.95, which is really a good price for one of the most popular Pizza places in London.
The menu states: “Our pizza is made from s low-rising sourdough and is baked in a wood-burning ‘Tuff’ brick oven made in Naples by a specialised artisan. This oven produces a heat of about 500 °c (930 °F ). The slow levitation and blast cooking process lock in the flour’s natural aroma and moisture giving a soft and easily digestible crust. As a result, the edge (cornicione ) is excellent and shouldn’t be discarded.“
I love when a restaurant explains a special procedure and gives details of the food that you are about to order. My expectations were so high that I couldn’t wait to taste that pizza, almost as much as when I went for the first time in Naples to taste the “World’s Best Pizza at l’Antica Pizzeria da Michele.
I ordered the pizza with gloucester old sport ham, mozzarella, buffalo ricotta, wild mushrooms and tomato. Cost £ 6.85. I also had a No Logo Craft Brewed Lager. Cost £3.30.
After only 10 minutes (maybe even less) we received our Pizzas.
Unfortunately the shape and texture didn’t look like what I was expecting: poor topping and very dry. That was a shame, because the pizza’s description was mouthwatering – but what I received looked like something different. The taste was ok but honestly, I had better Pizzas in London, served by much less notorious Restaurants.
I would probably give it another go, maybe it was just an unlucky day, but if this is the standard they deliver, I could classify it as an averagely good pizza, nothing more than that.
Franco Manca deserves a good grade for the service and the overall experience but a just above average mark for the Pizza they serve.
Very efficient service despite the number of people served in a Saturday night!
Just above £10 for a Pizza and a Beer. Vey inexpensive.
